Unfortunately nothing in this video is actionable advice, it feels like surface level platitudes for someone who doesn’t naturally get it. Don’t tell a depressed person life is better when they act happy
Great podcast on the issue of friendships.
Friendship can increase the level of our performance, help us go through the problems, and improve our health. These bonds in childhood and early years can shape our emotional growth, beliefs and values.
Making and maintaining friends can be uneasy.
Some studies proved that its participants tend to judge their own likeability much lower than that of strangers whom they had contacted beforehand. Scientists defined this as the "liking gap", which means that others usually like and rate us better than we do. Therefore, we have no reason to hesitate in getting in touch with others, and we can reasonably assume in advance that they would like us.
Conversely, scientist defined "acceptance prophecy", which refers to people who tend to see themself as well-liked and, in effect, are found to be warmer and friendlier by others. Towards this theory, the level of your self-confidence depends on the number of new people you come across in your life.
Psychologists also defined two types of more intimate friendships: companionships and closeness.
Companionships are the bonds people form based on common interests, hobbies, or values. Sometimes, it is just participation in the same class or team. Its results are an increase os self-esteem and our resilience to stress.
On the other hand, closeness is a friendship with a more developed level of intimacy, built on sharing thoughts and feelings as well as supporting each other. The consistency here plays a major role, which involves sticking to the plans, chatting regularly and remembering important issues. This also matters in long-distance friendships.
Friendship can also have its challenging or tough times. This can be when two friends are involved in some competition, as well as undermine the other's potential, betray or make a hurtful comment. This may also happen when one of them is unable or unwilling to support the other during tough times like break-ups, illness or personal tragedies.
The conversation may be the best solution in this case. However, it can be awkward and tough. Nevertheless, it is necessary to strengthen friendships in the long run. The key here is trying to be non-judgmental and non-defensive, without making accusations. And telling each other what and how we felt in certain situations.
"
Some friendships naturally come to an end. Others change. Whether new buddies or lifelong pals, all friendships can benefit from building healthy habits. And it's never too late to make a new friend."
It's good that I watched this. It has to do with me too. It's better and like it said from this video that I need and keep more friends instead of not. I know how it feels to lose some friends. And I'm trying and I will make more new friends now than I only have about a few of them. This is part of slight Aspergers that I have. But anyone without Autism can have trouble making and keeping friendships. Even people their own ages. Not just children and teens of any ages. But also grown ups of any age. Like me at 31 going on 32 in 3 months from now.
This is very interesting (I have no friends)
Thank you❤
Watching this an autistic person who has zero friends
It takes two to tango just like our relationship
